      Rare map of North America showing California as an island by Sanson, c. 1705. Second state, engraved by Antoine de Winter. This is a Dutch version of Sanson’s important map of North America, likely published in Algemeene Weereldtbeschryving. It shows California as an island with the indented northern coast from Luke Foxe’s information. All five Great Lakes are shown but are oddly shaped and incomplete. The R. de Nort originates in a lake above Santa Fe (possible the Great Salt Lake) and flows southwest to the Mar Vermeio and Quivira, the legendary city, can be found to the southeast. A large Spanish Florida stretches along the Gulf Coast and up to the Great Lakes, New France encompasses the Great Lakes and everything north, and the colonies of Nouvelle Angleterre and Virginie are also noted. This map also includes a squished Iceland and on the west side “Terre de Iesso” which is Japan, almost touching California. Very good condition with some minor spots/stains, some mild toning, some slight image transfer. Measures approx. 7.75 x 11 inches to the neatline.
